Texas Businesswoman Leads Initiative to Bring Food to More Than 10,000 Rio Grande Valley Residents
Love Soldiers’ Founder Perla Tamez partners up with Hispanic Star, a NYC-Based Campaign, McAllen-Based Nonprofit HELP and Elected Officials from 18 Cities
Perla Tamez, a successful Houston-based serial entrepreneur, Love Soldiers founder and Hispanic Star hub director, returns to South Texas home town of Mission during the COVID-19 quarantine to launch a donation drive to help others.
To help Tamez with this special drive, she also collaborated with several elected officials and created a special and strategic alliance with McAllen City Commissioner Tania Ramirez who also founded her nonprofit called Here Everybody Loves People (HELP). The donation drive’s goal is to help over 10,000 people with grocery baskets and those most on need from Friday, May 1 to Monday, May 11. Eighteen cities will be donating more than 5,500 grocery baskets to feed more than 10,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) area.
The participating 18 cities are: Alamo, Alton, Edinburg, Hargill, Hidalgo, La Joya, McAllen, Mission, Monte Alto, Palmview, Penitas, Pharr, Progresso, San Juan, Sharyland, Las Milpas, Weslaco, and Mercedes.
“The Hispanic community in the US has been hard hit with the pandemic and many residents are not able to work because of shelter in place restrictions. Some have lost their jobs permanently and the monetary budgets are tight,” said Tamez, CEO of the McAllen, Texas-based Love Soldiers, a 501(c) 3 that creates strategic alliances with other organizations to bring good to the community,
This idea resonated with Hispanic Star hub leaders like Tamez to implement acts of service directly in their communities like the RGV area. Tamez understands first hand that in order to execute the vision of Hispanic Star Founder Claudia-Romo Edelman, which was to create a positive platform to unify the Hispanic community in the United States, she had to set an example.
“My staff and I know the personal suffering of our clients’ families and I wanted to step up and make a significant difference for these residents,” said Tamez. “The greatest gift is the oath of service. It’s priceless.”
Additionally, Hispanic Star is doing a special campaign initiative working with over 25 leaders that will kick off in South Texas and will expand to 15 states.
Locally, Tamez and Ramirez are encouraging their families to come out and get their grocery baskets along with promoting the importance of the census 2020.
“Through this effort, we are showing people that we are helping the world one hand at a time,” said Ramirez.
